Lisa Marshall

Hi Sally:
My husband and I are in the process of adopting a baby girl from China. The one child limit means that most abandoned children are girls, because the boys are valued for their earning ability and the expectation that the boys - not the girls -will take care of their elderly parents. Apparently, girls are expected to care for their in-laws (which, in my view, makes them equally valuable since they'll be taking care of someone, but oh well). Another interesting tid-bit: China leads the world in science and technology (apparently) and our country's abysmal test scores in these areas mean China may rise to an unprecedented super-power. I'm sending my daughter to calculus and physics, stat!

Lisa, thank you for writing. I see I got the one child limit wrong. Yes I do think China leads the world in science and technology which is becoming very dicy. Also they have so many people that they do not mind losing a lot in a war. Fewer mouths to feed.

How long does it take to adopt a child from there?
