I am not renewing my cooking magazine subscriptions. I have pretty well got that down. I will still buy cookbooks, so don’t feel too badly about me. But even with the reduction of cookbooks, I will not be saving money. I am going to subscribe to Decorating Magazines. Personally I like the pared down look. But it doesn’t look very grandmotherly. And my husband has all this crap around, and his stuff does not look “English Cottage”. It looks more, “I don’t give a damn”. But that is not the topic. I have friends who have lovely decorated homes. And they have a lot of nicely decorated art, and collections. In their home it looks like art and collections, and it my house it looks like “stuff”. So I am subscribing to decorating magazines. They are just as fun to paw through as cooking magazines. They might show me how to make the new king sized bed without hiring a handy man to lift up the mattress. They might show me how to display my husband’s three months of magazines in an artful way. I am sure that I have enough “stuff” that if I can only fine out how to display it, this will be help. Well, I may have to spend some money for a few potted plants. And there is always the obligatory “throw”, although that could be passé. I do have a lot of books that can be casually placed at shifting angles. Now if I can only afford the bouquets in every room.
Yes, I'm also giving up all my subscriptions to cooking mags and switching to decorating. I love them, and I think they give lots of good ideas. I even get ideas from the advertisements.
Maybe you can get dad a tasteful leather magazine holder for his birthday that you can tuck in the corner of the dining room (see Crate & Barrel). That might clear up his piles of magazines from your table - that would drive me nuts too.

Ex-Pat - No, I don't subscribe to cooking mags. That was said tongue in cheek.
